The Western Hills Athletic Club is offering a lifeguard course to the public. Successful completion of the course will result in American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training / First Aid and CPR / AED for Lifeguards.
Students will need to complete an approximately 6-7 hour online portion of the class before the in class session on Saturday, April 4. The online portion does not need to be completed in one sitting. You can save your progress and start back where you left off. Upon completion, you will print out your completion certificate and bring it to class.
There is not a scheduled lunch break during the day. Students in the class will need to bring any lunch/snack they wish to consume during the class.
Attendance at all sessions is required to achieve certification.
All participants must be at least 15 years old to participate in the class. A prerequisite skills test will be given at the beginning of the class. It will include:
1. Swim 300 yards continuously using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swim goggles may be used.
2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs. You should place your hands under your armpits.
3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath.
Cost of the course is $160 a person and includes all required materials for the course. Class size is limited to 10 people at this time. Seating in the class is reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Walk-ins welcome if there is room available. Payment may be made by check or credit card.
